Default Firewall program

Hi. As the title states, i'm looking for a free firewall for a friend. I already know zonealarm make a free version for domestic use, but i'd like to know what are the other options out there and what are the pros and cons of each version if you know them.

P.S. I've used the search function and there isn't a lot of info on firewall, there is a pretty decent amount of infos on A-V programs though.

Thanks in advance.

You don't need a "Personal Firewall". Shut down all open services you don't need [1], don't work with superuser-permissions and use brain 1.0. That's all you need.

If your friend has a router, just use that. I don't have a router, so I use Comodo firewall. It gives you a lot of rules you can tweak to fit whatever you need to do. It's not as easy to use as something like Zone Alarm though.

like eggrolls stated, if your friend uses a router like almost everyone else these days, then he already has a firewall and actually shouldn't get a software one since two firewalls on the same network tend to cause errors. Have him look at the instructions and find the address to get into his routers settings, and he should be able to tweak the firewall from their ( note that with most routers this can be found in winxp by clicking Start->Run->CMD->ipconfig. The default gateway address will usually get you to your routers settings page. )
